The Fantasy Football Preview

Posted by Cantona Kickems on July 2007, 31

Alright guys and gurls, it’s time for the Fantasy football season preview. But first, here’s a step-by-step guide to get yourself into the free action:

  1. Create a yahoo account (if you haven’t done so already)
  2. Log on to http://uk.premiership.fantasysports.yahoo.com/football/
  3. Sign up with your existing yahoo account, Accept T&C…
  4. Register and create your team
  5. What can you do now? Join a group! (The Blog’s official group)
  6. You’re almost there. Group ID#: 3964 and Password: booyah
  7. Once you’re done with registration, you can visit the group’s page. More importantly, it’s time to create your team!

Just holler at me if you’ve any problems getting to step 7 and beyond. It’s easy to get into, and for those who have been playing in our private league for 4 years now, welcome back :)

The scoring format and the salary cap system for team selection remains the same from last year, which I think is a good thing (why fix it if it’s not broken?). The player prices were brought forward from last season, except for the recent transfers (torres, hargreaves, etc.). My hope for this year is that the Yahoo guys improve the updating of scores. Sure, they are doing us a super service just by putting the game out there, but hey, we’d like the scores to come in faster, and more accurate. Pretty please? [With sugar on top]

Four teams in the league thus far. Hmm…I could do with a larger set of competitors.

On another note, please stay tuned to the blog ‘cos I’ve got some bonuses coming in for you folks. Watch out for it in the near future…

APOLLO’S SONG

Posted by Small Potato FC on July 2007, 31

The football break has been a revelation to me … as I have been re-acquainted with another medium that gives me the same non-reefer related kicks … the graphic novel. Particularly Apollo’s Song. The author, the late Osamu Tezuka, is a nut-job genius, up there with the likes of Alan Moore, Will Eisner, and Frank Miller. Written and drawn over 30 years ago, the book was ahead of its time.

It’s got me thinking that the best graphic novels are not necessarily the most entertaining, or that it should necessarily contain the most eye-popping visual or storyline. All that stuff is secondary. What matters most is perhaps whether they have something original or unique to bring to the table.. you know that unconventional coolness which causes that ripple in the ocean which leads to a wave of imitators in its wake. Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns brought something fresh in the superhero genre in all its Frank Miller-ish sinfulness. Alan Moore’s Watchmen was unprecedented in the graphic novel medium when it first came out in 1986 and continues to be unprecedented as we speak. The comic medium is thankful to these renegades. MTV is thankful to Michael Jackson.

And the EPL is thankful to Cristiano Ronaldo. Nani in particular, should be thankful to him.

On the football front, I have already chosen my 11 fantasy players for the season-opening EPL games. All I can say is that Nani is one of them. He has the right ingredients to be Cristiano Ronaldo’s Mini Me.

Friday afternoon blues

Posted by Cantona Kickems on July 2007, 27

Friday afternoon blues. Why?

No football.

Times are tough when you are a Malaysian footie fan, and it’s the EPL break. It has been a head-turning transfer season, with the arrival of Torres to Liverpool, the triage of transfers by the Red Devils, and Chelsea making the biggest headlines by spending a buck or so.

As a reward for reading the first post of the blog, I’m gonna prepare you folks with the 1st day schedule for the EPL [AUGUST 11th!], the games that will most likely be shown on Astro:

Sunderland vs Tottenham Hotspurs at 7:45 pm.

Bolton vs Newcastle at 10 pm.

Aston Villa vs Liverpool at 12.15am (Sunday mornin)

Preview of these games to come…stay tuned. In the meantime, here’s a video to remember:
